Objectives
  • Improve the solution convergence robustness of complex dynamic deployment by translating mechanical discontinuities (such as latching, brakes,...) with pseudo-continuous elements.

  • Improve and validate the structural damping mathematical models for dynamic deployment including test correlation.

  • Implement energy measurements in order to assess validity of numerical solution.

  • Enhance sensitivity Monte-carlo-like analysis tool to be able to introduce disturbance on elastic properties (such as mode shapes, frequencies,...).

Description
In the frame of past research activity focused on reviewing numerical time integration schemes for solving complex deployable space system such as Large Deployable Reflector and P-band FLATS antenna, two main limitations were clearly identified:

  • The first limitation is on the modelling of discontinuities (such latches, brakes,...). The current representation of these elements is not optimized with severe consequences on solution convergence and robustness.

  • The second limitation is on the selection of the proper structural damping mathematical representation. It is essential to identify the most suitable representation among the several model current available in literature. Furthermore, in large solar array deployment the need to independently assess the validity of numerical solution by mean of monitor the energy characteristics of the whole system (kinetic energy, potential energy, total angular momentum, ...) is vital. Moreover, there is a clear need to investigate the effects of uncertainties on elastic components of the system without the need of re-condensate the Finite Element Model. Above identified improvements are crucial also for the dynamic simulation and verification activities for long deployable mast and more in general ultra stable deployable structures, which are essential to enable future science and Earth observation missions.
