AI-powered Digital Assistant for space - system engineering
Objectives

To support system engineers in modelling a space mission by providing an AI-powered Digital Assistant.

Description

The space mission development process tends to show several commonalities across projects. Indeed, systems often use the same generic set of technologies, with similar assumptions and requirements. The use of a Digital Assistant would be able to recognise such commonalities and propose suggestions during the early phase of system development based on previous projects. This would speed the definition stages, while also allowing to re-use potential lessons learned and hopefully to avoid simple mistakes/omissions. The use of an Artificial Intelligence (AI), trained on previous system designs, would allow the capture of such knowledge and enable relevant suggestions for the system being designed. The activity encompasses the following tasks:- Analysis of existing knowledge resources (e.g. digital models, reports) and comparison against the available technologies (including AI) that could utilise this.- Assessment of the needs of the outputs of the Digital Assistant, in terms of what information would be of most use to system (and subsystem) engineers in the development process.- Development of an automated tool, the Digital Assistant, which would be capable of analysing the available knowledge resources and identify and propose common patterns in system design and configuration. The tool would enable/enhance 'Data Source' capabilities of the System Factory, and could exploit data exchanged via the Digital Engineering Hub. It would also build on work performed by or including the Agency such as 'Machine Learning for Science Operations (SCI-O) Virtual Assistants', 'Analysis of database alternatives to Science Archives time series data' and 'Chatbot and Virtual Assistant for Operations'.
