De-risk assessment: High-Performance Pulse-tube Cold Finger
Objectives
Investigate design options for miniaturization of pulse-tube cold fingers. Simulate and optimize pulse-tube cold fingers for miniaturization and efficiency. Experimentally verify predicted performance by breadboard testing
Description
For better use of cryogenic coolers, performance needs to be improved and size needs to be reduced. Miniaturization is usually achieved by increasing the drive frequency of the cooler. The miniaturization is the result of the subsequent smaller displacements in the system. However, miniaturization and higher efficiency requires optimization of efficiency. Technical and performance requirements are setup to match market needs for both COTS+ space applications and high end tactical applications.

Three potential Cold finger configurations designed and optimized. Modular breadboard is designed and used in experimental verification. Performance requirements are met. Starting point for follow up developments are defined. Significant reduction in size and increase in efficiency achieved.

The tested configurations show the required performance in the relevant envelope. Design choices are suitable for COTS+ applications and series-produced coolers. Design methodology defined and starting point for detailed development activity available.

Review requirements and determine interface conditions for suitable compressor. Detailed design, translate modular breadboard concepts into coaxial pulse-tube cold finger design. MAIT of Pulse-Tube cooler prototype/EBB.
