Verification and Validation of Rendezvous and Proximity Operations Safety

To develop methods and tools for verification and validation of requirements for safety during Rendezvous and Proximity Operations for non-human rated missions, cooperative and uncooperative future servicing missions.
The constantly raising worldwide interest in the execution of rendezvous, proximity and capture operations for on-orbit services such as repair, refuelling, and tugging has highlighted the lack of clear and widely accepted technical requirements and their associated verification and validation methods for ensuring that rendezvous and proximity operations are conducted in a safe manner.Previous activities (e.g. e.Deorbit, ESA Working Group with external participation for Close Proximity Operations) have identified clear knowledge gaps of major importance for rendezvous, proximity and capture operations and are currently moving forward in defining technical requirements for performing rendezvous and proximity operations in a safe way. This activity encompasses the following tasks:- Perform a systematic analysis of the rendezvous and proximity operations requirements together with the associated verification methods - Assess the state of the art for the various rendezvous tools available for the verification methods identified deriving the gap analysis- Generate the tool(s) required / update existing tool(s) where possible- Demonstration of the verification process / tools through a case study including discussion of the approach with the various stakeholders (e.g. insurers, operators, manufacturers)
