In order for off-Earth top surface structures built from regolith to protect astronauts from radiation, they need to be several metres thick. With support from European Space Agency (ESA) and Vertico, the Technical University Delft (TUD) advanced research into constructing habitats in empty lava tubes on Mars in order to create subsurface habitats. By building below ground level not only natural protection from radiation is achieved but also thermal insulation because the temperature below ground is more stable.

In this activity, lunar regolith simulants were characterised based on their thermal behaviour, particle size distribution and composition, in order to inform the choice of consolidation method for functionally graded materials (FGMs) – powder characterisation results are provided in the 'conference paper' deliverable.
Firstly, an extensive literature review study (deliverable 'Literature Review') identified Digital Light Processing (DLP) and Spark Plasma Sintering (SPS) as promising consolidation techniques.

A major challenge in the field of control is to achieve reliable, aggressive, high-speed control of autonomous vehicles. In space, this may involve spacecraft that need to land under harsh conditions, or even – in an extreme scenario – negotiating asteroid debris fields at high speeds. On Earth, the exemplar task that draws most attention currently is high-speed autonomous flight of drones. The application of optimal control on board limited platforms has been severely hindered by the large computational requirements of current state-of-the-art implementations.

Magnetometers are fundamental instruments used in planetary and space science. They are able to measure magnetic fields originating in a planet’s interior, past fields encapsulated in rocks in the crust, as well as magnetic fields generated by the motion of charged particles in the plasma environments of ionospheres, magnetospheres and interplanetary space.

The primary objective of the Benchmarking re-entry prediction uncertainties study is to fully exploit the informa- tion content of the GOCE observations and telemetry collected during its reentry phase for better understand- ing re-entry predictions in general and for GOCE in particular (ESA, 2015). Down to an altitude of 137 km, a rich data set of high-quality GPS, star tracker and also accelerometer observations were collected, be it that the latter were more and more saturated.

The study was motivated by the need to get a better, quantitative, understanding of the advantages and disadvantages of SAR and multispectral image data, taking into account the spatial and temporal at which such data are generally available and the characteristics of floodplains in Southern Africa.

The research and sound design team consists of members from the Delft University of Technology, Faculty of Industrial Design Engineering and Plymouth University, School of Psychology. The main team members included one industrial designer specialized in sound design and research and two experimental and applied psychologists specialized in auditory perception and cognition in the field of sound design and application.

The study combined hydrologic models with multi-spectral remote sensing informationto assess the consistency of the water allocation with the actual irrigated area and crop water requirements (CWR) by refining algorithms for Irrigation Performance Indicators (IPI's). It evaluated thefrequency and continuity of monitoring CWR using medium / high spatial resolution satellite data.
