Satellite communications via space-based internet service providers

In this project, the University of Luxembourg studied and evaluated a new concept of connecting space missions via space internet providers. The system requirements, necessary adaptations, and possible limitations are provided and discussed. Three types of space internet provider were studied and evaluated: Starlink, OneWeb and O3b mPOWER.

Detecting riverine plastic conglomerations, fluxes and pathways in Indonesia

The project, renamed in short “Plastic Monitor”, was part of the ESA’s Discovery Campaign on Remote Sensing of Plastic Marine Litter, funded by the Discovery Element of the ESA’s Basic Activities. Plastic Monitor aimed at assessing the feasibility of detection of heavy plastic pollution loads in an Indonesian river by using satellite imagery and ground truth and to demonstrate how Remote Sensing can enhance the quantification and monitoring of plastic input into the marine environment.

Commonly used classical cryptographic protocols, such as the RSA-protocol, rely on the hardness of computational problems. With the advent of quantum computing (QC), the hardness assumptions of these problems is nullified, since they can be solved efficiently on a QC. On the other hand, the security of Quantum key distribution (QKD) rests upon the very laws of physics and guarantees information-theoretic security, which not only enables tap-proof communication at present, but also prevents any future technology to crack encrypted messages.

Ge on Si Feasibility

The focus of study is to build near-IR capability onto Si CCDs for Time-Delay-Integration (TDI) applications, with the main requirement being charge domain summation, which allows the lowest noise performance on these types of devices. Currently there is no product that exists to do this. Si CCDs are a well-established technology which, whilst being an “old” technology, are still world leading in certain applications up to a wavelength of ~1μm.
