The GSP study "New Microwave Sampling Concepts for TTC architecture" has shown that the electro-photonic sampling technology is capable of sampling signals up to Ka band. Whereas standard sampling technologies are still limited up to 20 ghz. The same electro-photonic technology can be used in the ground stations receivers (using microwave subsampling) or in the transmitter (signal oversampling). The electro-photonic device is associated with high performance ADC , DAC and FPGA and will be integrated in a transmitter and receiver front end.

Active battery management is not currently used on ESA missions (apart from reducing End of Charge Voltage during the cruise of deep space missions to increase battery lifetime) but does see some limited use in cubesat programmes. Active battery management is used extensively in terrestrial energy storage. By monitoring the state of charge and voltage of the battery, the power in/out of the battery can be actively managed. This allows several benefits such as sizing a battery more conservatively because different operational modes can be accommodated more easily.

Science TTC systems, Earth observation instruments and Telecommunication system payloads are more and more calling for multi-frequency reflector-based high gain antennas. As examples, one may refer to altimeters, radiometers and SAR (e.g. COREH2O) for Earth Observation and high-gain data transmission antennas as for the JUICE mission requiring both X- and Ka-band frequencies. Multi-frequency and multi-polarisation operation is often required hence the need for Frequency/polarization Selective Surfaces(FSS) integrated with (sub)reflectors or partially reflective surface.

Reduction of EMI emission is usually considered a secondary optimization criterion in the design of DC-to-DC power converters for space applications and their filters, where power efficiency, mass and volume are driving design criteria. Several basic methods and techniques exist to reduce EMI, e.g. Filtering and shielding. Typical designs use these basic reduction techniques to a limited extent to meet generic requirement limits. The achievable improvement in EMI reduction needs to be however traded-off against increases in mass, size and power loss.

Industry pushes towards higher operation temperatures of diodes while reducing cost. SiC technology with plastic packaging offers promising results able to match these requirements. Some applications (i.e. spaceship solar arrays) requirements are as high as 250°C. This application was considered as potential target application for the project test units designed.

Three different device types were designed, manufactured, and tested in the frame of the project using well known SiC Schottky dies, three mould compounds and two die configurations:

Background and justification:

  • The use of Additive Manufacturing (AM) technologies in the Space sector is gaining traction, although it is necessary to find new use cases and develop them up to TRL7 or TRL9 to be meaningful

Large structures in space are an essential and recurring element for space exploitation and exploration. Whether for collecting solar power, or reflecting radio signals or light, dimensions matter. In fact large structures are continuously increasing in size to bring increased economic and scientific benefits.
However, to realise these benefits, robotic capability to assemble the structures in-orbit is needed, as future structures will be too large to launch into orbit as a single self-deploying piece.
