Solar cell development for space up to now is mainly driven by increasing the power/mass and power/area ratio. Therefore, the main objective in solar cell development is to increase the efficiency of the cell. For those type of products, customers are prepared to accept also higher costs as long as the ?/Watt measure do not increase.

The technology for the mounting of optical components has become more challenging in the past years due to the more stringent requirements for positioning accuracy and long-term stability. In addition, requirements on cleanliness limit standard mounting techniques used on commercial optics based on adhesives. Space missions that are becoming more and more demanding tend to use larger refractive elements, such as lenses and gratings. Furthermore, the materials used in the UV or infrared wavelength spectrum have poor mechanical properties, and are susceptible to plastic deformation.

An investigation shall be done of the feasibility of a fractionated (multi-static) surface/sub-surface sounder configuration that fulfils the needs of the key application of interest i.e. remote sensing of the planets or moons of planets. This type of configuration allows to increase the SNR (having more than one receiver) and together with the use of advanced radar processing strategies enables the clutter removal or feature extraction.

With increasing demands on the sensitivity of remote sensing optical instruments, stray light has become an ever more critical issue. Diffraction gratings, which are key components of most spectral analysis optical instruments, contribute a particularly high amount of scattered stray light due to manufacturing imperfections. Diffraction gratings often represent the strongest contributor of scatter in a modern high performance instrument.

This activity aims to identify and evaluate any synergies between measurements at different frequencies to improve the estimations of bio and geo physical parameters.
 
The benefit should be assessed with respect to:
  • The differences and similarities depending on the measurement configuration ? Spaceborne SAR missions operate in very different configurations: single-, dual- or quad-polarimetric or in a mono- or bi- static mode. The performed measurements have different spatial resolutions under different geometries.

Power units have been using the same integration system since decades. It is based on a vertical module approach that limits considerably the thermal access to the baseplate. Moreover, some of the modules have very low dissipation but still use the same system. As a consequence, these modules occupy some precious space that is scarce for the high power consumers. This becomes a limiting factor in high dissipation units. Power units like Power Conditioning Units (PCDU) and Power Propulsion Units for Electrical Propulsion (PPU) easily dissipate more 300W.
