The DTU-ESA Facility complements the ESTEC test facilities in supplying ESA with high-accuracy (~0.001 db) antenna calibration services. In recent years, the DTU-ESA Facility has contributed to ESA missions such as SMOS, SENTINEL-1 and Galileo, and provided its assistance and expertise for the new ESTEC test facilities.
 
There is a need to develop the antenna test capability which entails all steps of facility operation, in particular the following aspects will be dealt with microwave and data acquisition hardware/software, alignment tools, probe system.

    • Assess and identify the limitations of the commonly used approach for strength verification of composite laminates under cryogenic thermo-mechanical environment (including modelling, failure criteria with supporting test methods to determine allowable values).
    • Assess relevance of stacking sequences of plies in the laminate for resistance against cryogenic thermo-mechanical loading.

      The 3DEES design established in the previous activity has multiple sensor stacks, each sampling a different direction. The detection techniques build on the technology from the general-purpose Energetic Particle Telescope (EPT) that is flying on Proba-V. To provide mechanical stability, low mass and compactness, a molded epoxy stack will hold both sensors and front-end electronics.

      Thermal imagers can provide temperature measurement over a large area with high resolution, but they require further development to deliver lower uncertainty quantitative temperature measurement across all important components. One of the ways to improve thermal imager performance and ease of use is it to have the device operate in thermal vacuum.

      ATENA system is easy to access by many users and its maintence is effective. In addition, the system has a modern UX/UI which is developed as a web-based application. Within the ATENA we have a special set of building blocks enabling communication and test of equipment defined using SSM (Space System Model) concept. Within the de-risk we have also developed integration mechanisms that enables testing of prototype EGS-CC system connected with RTF Simulator.
