Today, there is little knowledge on the attitude state of decommissioned objects.Observational means have improved in the past years, but are still limited regarding accurate estimate of motion vector orientations and magnitude.Yet, such knowledge is essential for the preparation of a removal mission, since attitude motions above a few degree per second will not allow to use classical robotic capture mechanisms anymore. Hence, the attitude state of the target is a significant criterion for the selection of removal techniques.

As already proved feasible by the flight of the Sounding Hypersonic Atmospheric Re-entering Kapsule (SHARK) on the MAXUS-8 sounding rocket, the present activity shall make use of the spare payload volume, otherwise used for ballast, to perform a low cost flight test of a supersonic parachute on the MAXUS mission in 2015.

Long-duration exploration missions like e.g. to Mars will pose completely new challenges to space crews, compared to Low Earth Orbit flights. One of the potentially critical issues is psychology. Multiple stressors act on the minds in spaceflight, based on the general environment, mission characteristics, the habitat, the social situation etc. All of these will be present or even much more prominent in exploration class missions. Most psychological support measures in use today are employed in-flight.

The aircraft grade of GLARE has shown that the layered material concept (FMLs) can be optimized for structural applications as well as protection applications. The impact protection that can be reached (shown for the aircraft grade) is 12 times the one of CFRPs at low impact velocities and 30 times higher at high velocities. Even compared to high strength Aluminium it is 4 times higher at low impact velocities and 3 times higher at high velocities.

ESA is pursuing a new generation of high precision, multi-frequency GNSS receivers based on the AGGA-4 chips. This will be applicable to many different space mission types (see objectives) and to different purposes as supporting Earth observation measurements via Precise Orbit determination, Radio-occultation, absolute navigation for GNC/AOCS, relative navigation for constellations and formation flying. Compared to the present technology, the new generation will allow handling heritage and modernised GPS and Galileo signals and will extend application beyond LEO.
