Objectives: 
To design, manufacture and test a position sensor targeting low cost (6 to 8K? each), low accuracy (8 to 10 bits) and high reliability

Description: 
Several developments are on-going and targeting an accuracy above 10 bits, however no development and no product in the market is currently covering low accuracy. There is a clear need for this type of sensors as for many applications that need low or medium accuracy sensors, cost is normally an important factor. To fit this type of applications, current mechanisms use potentiometers, which are easy to integrate and cheap compared to other products, however, they are prone to noise and limited life because of their technology, based on sliding electrical contact.
Therefore, the aim of this activity is to develop a sensor that can provide an alternative to potentiometers without their noise issues.

During the 2018 harmonisation exercise for position sensors, the need for such a development has been highlighted, and already industry has provided their interest in performing such an activity. Companies that could be interested in performing the development are smes developing sensors for space or companies developing mechanism assemblies, as the sensor then can be integrated in their mechanisms.

Position sensor I/F shall be compatible with today and future Spacecraft electrical I/F (analog, CAN bus, etc.).

Contactless solution will be an asset to guarantee high reliability of the position sensor.

This activity encompasses the following tasks:
-Establish a set of requirements based on market survey and costumer consultation
-Perform a survey to identify the preferred solution to achieve the requirements established
-Design an breadboard model, low cost, low resolution position sensor.
-Manufacture of Breadboard position sensor
-Perform functional testing of Breadboard Position sensor in laboratory conditions
