Telemetry data is the most valuable asset provided by any spacecraft. Increasing the data amount sent from space to ground increases a mission’s value, but often this comes with increased costs. Compression of Space generated data provides great benefits to both the large ESA missions by increasing the mission science throughput and small missions (which typically have low bandwidth) by increasing the traditional low downlink rates of these missions. One solution to this problem is the POCKET+ lossless compression algorithm, which is currently being standardized by CCSDS.

Multiple different stakeholders can detect and identify events (space collision predictions, natural disaster definitions). This project, Space DAO, sets the base infrastructure to agree on consensus mechanisms to reduce confusion and augment trust in key decision making information.

With the “democratisation of space”, and the proliferation of large non-geostationary orbit (NGO) constellations, the pace at which human-made objects are being deployed in orbit demands urgent action in defining and supporting a global Space Traffic Management (STM) plan. Promptly identifying, tracking, and cataloguing of resident space objects (RSOs), in particular after orbit insertion or break-up and fragmentation events, as the recent Russian anti-satellite weapon (ASAT) test put in evidence, is of critical importance to enable a safe and sustainable use of space.

The driver behind the MoBaTe activity was to propose ways to improve the current software development and validation lifecycle using MBSE techniques to shift some of the system validation activities to the early stages of development. The roadmap to achieve this included identifying strategies, required model properties, modelling tools and languages needed to move from a requirements-based approach to a model-based approach. All this considering existing and established workflows and tools currently used by the Agency.
Etamax Space GmbH
The “SaaSy ML” idea will provide experimenters with on-board Machine Learning (ML) functionalities that any app can subscribe to via a Software as a Service (SaaS) app hosted on the Satellite Experimental Processing Platform (SEPP). The ML features provided by the SaaS app will cover both training and prediction operations. The JSAT open-source java library for ML will be re-used thus making accessible over 100 training algorithms on-board a flying mission. Re-using the JSAT library will ensure the development to focus on the idea's novel aspect: a spacecraft SaaS app for in-orbit ML.

In order to enable lunar exploration in a sustainable manner, it is necessary to develop technologies that allow the use of lunar resources in-situ. Additive manufacturing techniques are being studied for in-situ resources utilization on the Moon (e.g.: solar or laser sintering). The results of these studies, presented samples with low mechanical properties due to the formation of defects and cracks within the final product.

The overall goal of the TRACE project was to build a remote sensing based fully automated system for the detection and tracking of large marine litter and accumulation patches of smaller litter items in order to obtain precise and reliable data on floating macro-litter regarding their quantity, position, accumulation zones, material properties, floating depth, and sources. The tracking mechanism has been implemented by coupling the daily satellite-based detections with an oceanographic forecasting system and by a two-step object matching approach.

Monitoring areas closer to plastic marine litter sources that can be very well targeted, such as rivers and estuarine systems, has the potential to improve mitigation strategies. Since the area to be monitored is much smaller, mitigation strategies can be spatially focused and even clean-up activities can be more efficient (more targeted). Recent studies showed that floating plastics emitted from the coast depict a much greater chance to rapidly return to land with most litter stranding within a short distance of the river mouth.
