The main goal of this Ariadna study was to determine the radiation hardness of potential future space processors. The AR0 test-chip was used to study the impact of SEUs and SETs on different versions of a hardened processor on UTBB-FDSOI 28nm technology, including DICE flip-flops, and three different hardening level of combinational logic.

In recent years, surface-penetrating radars have formed a part of several ESA missions in both monostatic and bi-static configurations. Such radars can be found, for instance, on board Mars Express where, using MARSIS, the Martian sub-surface is sensed, as well as on board Rosetta where CONSERT was used to probe the comet 67P/Churyumov-Gerasimenko.

At present, the largest part of the catalogued space debris population consists of fragments originating from accidental explosions of spacecraft and upper stages, but it is expected that hypervelocity collisions involving large objects could become the primary source of new debris in the mid-term future. In this context, understanding the physical processes involved in spacecraft collisions is crucial, because these big impacts are one of the key drivers of the long-term evolution of the amount of space debris.

The VHF Data Exchange System (VDES) is a future maritime communication system with the principal objective of enhancing maritime communication applications, based on robust and efficient digital transmission with wider bandwidth than Automatic Identification System (AIS), with a data rate up to 32 times the current AIS. As for AIS, VDES is mainly a ship-to-ship and ship-to-shore system. The ship-to-shore system will use the terrestrial VDES infrastructure that will extend the VDES coverage to only around 60 km from the shore.

There is increased attention being given to safeguarding Earth's orbital environment, as reflected by the number of relevant regulations that are being set forward by national governments and international organisations. Among others, ESA has published a Space Debris Mitigation Policy for Agency Projects (ESA/ADMIN/IPOL(2014)2), supported by the corresponding ESA Space Debris Mitigation Compliance Verification Guidelines (ESSB-HB-U-002).

The mushroom-forming fungi Pleurotus ostreatus (PO), Trametes versicolor (TV) and Schizophyllum commune (SC) are known to effectively colonise organic material. These fungi were grown on the aquatic fern Azolla filiculoides (AF), the fastest growing plant on Earth, and that can fix its own nitrogen. SC showed the best growth on AF. Therefore, growth of this fungus was determined under microgravity conditions and high radiation dosage (up to 200 Gy) and related to melanin production.

The main scope of this activity was to foster the exchange of expertise between the European Lidar Network (EARLINET) and Latin America Lidar Network (LALINET), and demonstrate the capability of joint research, setting the groundwork for GALION (The Global Atmosphere Watch Aerosol Lidar Observation Network) and future calibration/validation of ESA’s atmospheric satellite missions such as Aeolus and EarthCARE.

The project aimed to design an optical instrument based on Compressive Sensing (CS) for a space applications. Conventional sampling or compression methodologies follow the Shannon-Nyquist theorem, which states that if a signal frequency band or spectrum is limited to a frequency B [Hz], the signal is completely determined by a sample-rate larger than 2xB samples per second. Compressive Sensing (CS) provides a fundamentally new approach to data acquisition or signal sampling.

While the vast majority of space debris still stems from explosion events of satellites and rocket upper stages, current forecasts state that collisions, such as those between the Cosmos 2251 and Iridium 33 satellites in 2009, will play a dominant role in the mid-term future when a critical spatial density of satellites has been reached. In order to assess the risks emanating from space debris, a deeper understanding of the formation and residence time of breakup debris in orbit is essential for operational activities.

The interest in HAPS is increasing in many areas, from military and security to commercial services. On the telecommunications side, HAPS are seen as relays to provide internet services worldwide, and as a possible complement to satellites. On the Earth observation side, the near-space location of the HAPS enables new services or could improve the existing satellite ones. From the satellite or from the HAPS market sides, it is important to understand how both systems can offer complementary services, and what the possible synergies between them are.
