This experiment has been selected for flight on the ISS within the ILSRA (International Life Science Research Announcement) 2014 exercise, and it is planned that ESA astronaut A. Gerst (flying in May 2018) will be the first subject. The device needs to be ready for the third quarter of 2017. Estonia GSTP G613-030HS MYOTON AS 2017 - 2019 Adaptation of a device for muscle health and physical condition research Non-invasive muscle activity and metabolism monitoring The musculo-skelettal system is victim of the deleterious effects on the human body caused by a prolonged exposure to a weightless environment. The proposed activity is a follow-up of an ESA activity aiming at providing new complementary knowledge about the efficiency of countermeasure exercise programmes in preventing muscle atrophy, with potential use for design (andmonitoring) of training programmes to stimulate specific muscle groups and for rehabilitation. The study considered a payload delivery service that would be an end-to end service from Earth to a targeted location on the Moon, launched not later than 2025. These consumables are generally packaged into dedicated containers, which cannot be re-used and have to be wasted. For food only, the amount of wastes generated by packaging is estimated to be between 300 and 500g/crew member and day, which represents close to 40% of packed food mass. These fungi were grown on the aquatic fern Azolla filiculoides (AF), the fastest growing plant on Earth, and that can fix its own nitrogen. SC showed the best growth on AF. Therefore, growth of this fungus was determined under microgravity conditions and high radiation dosage (up to 200 Gy) and related to melanin production. Local sleep episodes during wakefulness and long term space travel The aim of this study was to assess how space travel modifies local sleep episodes in wakefulness during a visuo-motor task and weather this is related to performance. To this end, specific EEG (electroencephalogram) data previously recorded on board the ISS during the Neurospat experiment (AO-2004, 118) were used.
