To realize the next generation of gravitational wave detectors, Nikhef, the Dutch National Institute for Subatomic Physics started developing a novel seismic sensor: An ultra-sensitive miniaturised accelerometer made in micro-electro- mechanical system (MEMS) technology. The goal was to develop an affordable accelerometer that was as sensitive as conventional seismometers, but significantly smaller and cheaper. Innoseis, a spin-off company, has been licensed to bring this cutting-edge technology to market.

The objective of the proposed PNT Traffic Light project is to develop a continuous 24/7 performance monitoring tool for EGNOS/GNSS (and particularly for GPS, GALILEO and EGNOS) on the northern and arctic region of, at least, EGNOS coverage area. In addition to just EGNOS, the tool shall be designed to support assessment of the performance of also other GNSSs (at least GPS and Galileo).

The research activity aimed at the development of relative navigation and combined control algorithms for controlling an autonomous spacecraft equipped with a redundant manipulator used to capture a target spacecraft. Numerical testing of the GNC solution proposed was performed through an accurate and realistic simulation tool. The GNC system shows good performance for all the considered scenarios, although SC3 is the most challenging due to the high rotation rate of the target. The error budget analysis has highlighted the major sources of errors.

The goals to improve mechanical and magnetic material properties for soft magnetic Ni50Fe50 specimens processed by LPBF was achieved. Tensile strength is with ~500 MPa higher than the targeted 365 MPa and close to values of conventionally processed material. Whereas, magnetic properties measured are still lower than those specified in the datasheet of PERMENORM 5000V5 material by VAC. Since the density achieved is already close to 100% it can be concluded that not only density has a strong influence on the magnetic properties.

Time-to-Digital Converters (TDCs) are crucial elements in many sensor readout systems, such as time-of-flight sensors, laser ranging devices, LiDAR, ultrasonic sensors, particle detectors, etc. To the best of our knowledge, there is currently no rad-hard TDC component available on the market, which could meet the targeted specification defined in this project. The goal of this project is prototyping and lab testing of a radiation-hardened single-chip picosecond TDC in a commercial 65 nm CMOS technology.
