SPE can be considered as related mainly to deterministic effects of the cosmic radiation, with hazards to man arising for physical doses above 2 Gy, when symptoms of the hematopoietic syndrome appear. More specifically DIAMS has allowed to define the end-to-end mission concept for this IOD, covering the design of various associated segments : Space Segment (Payload, Platform), and Ground Segment. Both interest and programmatic aspects have also been consolidated. - On the technical plane : Both the requirements and the design of the system have been refined to validate the IOD concept : France Discovery 13/701 Airbus Defence & Space 2014 - 2016 IOD of techniques and technologies for M2M Telecom missions Future Deep Space Optical Communication Architecture Satellite based optical communications in space is rapidly progressing, involving an increasing number of flight validations in LEO, GEO and beyond. Various space agencies successfully demonstrated both, optical Inter-Satellite communication Links (ISL's) which have been validated in flight experiments since 2001 and direct-to-Earth (DTE) optical communications. UK Discovery 13-064 UCL CONSULTANTS LTD 2014 - 2016 Microwave Drilling Development Strategy for Nano-enabled fibre reinforced plastics The scope of the project was to investigate and develop suitable strategies for the development of nano-enabled fibre reinforced plastics (neFRP) in order to produce materials tailored to the customer's needs and requirements. Within the scope of the work was also to establish a quality control system to assure that the produced products are of acceptable quality and can be integrated in functional parts for space applications. The implementation of this technology has a large variety of capabilities for components/ subsystems including Germany Discovery 13-042-a OHB System AG 2014 - 2016 System impact of additive manufacturing technologies design features Disposal strategies analysis for MEO orbits The Medium Earth Orbit (MEO) region, home of the operational Global Navigation Satellite Systems (GNSS) GPS and Glonass, is becoming more and more exploited with the advent of the European Galileo and the Chinese Beidou constellations, both in their build-up phase. The sensitive applications of the navigation satellites and the absence of any natural sink mechanism, such as the atmospheric drag, call for a careful debris prevention policy able to preserve the MEO environment, avoiding in the future the problems now already faced by the LEO and the Geostationary Orbit (GEO) environments. Because of the large collision velocities, Hypervelocity Impacts (HVI) with M/OD may cause significant damage to various subsystems and components up to mission failure. Before embarking on this study the geodetic community and space agencies have come to realize that weaknesses in current single-pair gravimetric satellite missions such as GRACE or GRACE-FO (to be launched in 2017) would significantly be alleviated by having a second GRACE-type pair in space simultaneously.
