End-to-end mission performance simulators for Earth Observation missions are one of the prominent tools for system design and scientific validation in early mission phases.
 
The main goal of the BIBLOS activity is to provide a library of software units that can be used to build an end-to-end simulator.
 
This activity will focus on adding new functionalities to currently supported instruments:

    Current spacecraft designs are using indirect measurements for the propellant left within the tank. One example for that is the measurement of the pressure, volume and temperature inside the tank from which then the propellant mass can be derived. Common to all those methods is the indirect measurement of the propellant mass left, leading to high uncertainties for it.

    Frequency coverage for weather and science missions in mm-wave and submm-wave radiometers is increasing and it is now possible for Omnisys to commercially offer receivers up to 1-2 THz. For frequencies exceeding 300 GHz, integrated MMIC technology is preferred as it enables performance improvements and allows for more efficient system level implementations.

    Upcoming Earth observation missions will feature very high downlinks rates over less reliable links (K-Band / Optical). Supporting such high rates may require the adoption of new standards like the Unified Space Data Link Protocol allowing larger frame sizes and the re-transmission of data segments like done in the CCSDS LTP protocol or private ARQ schemes. The less predictable nature of optical downlinks makes it even more necessary to seek into alternatives like a more networked communication paradigm.

    For passivation, it is required that the electrical power sources on-board a spacecraft after its operational phase are depleted or made safe. This requirement is driven by the fact that some accidental satellite breakups have been caused by the battery in the past. One of the drivers of such battery explosion is being at high state of charge. At the end of mission, the solar panels continue to provide charge to the battery, particularly if the satellite once uncontrolled ends up sun pointing, which increases the chance of battery explosion.

    The increased interest in flying Small Sat missions and initiation of ESA projects to improve reliability of CubeSats has resulted in an increased utilisation of COTS EEE Components. Although, COTS components performance capabilities may outperform traditional space qualified components, there are limitations strongly complicating their use for space applications. Limitations concern lack of traceability, packaging constraints, radiation sensitivity and questions regarding board level and component level testing.

    Vibration is one of the main issues when it comes to the design of space hardware and as such, it should be considered in the early phases of spacecraft design. When this factor is overlooked, a later identification of vibration and shock issues causes a deep impact on the performance of the spacecraft. Often the only solutions available, such as a dedicated damper, are detrimental for design, cost and schedule of the mission.
