A new activity with GSTP Element 1 and Romania has developed a GNSS receiver based on COTS components that can achieve positioning accuracy to less than 10 cm without trading a loss in robustness.

Called OrbFIX, this GNSS receiver for space can produce high positioning precision in the vital low volume, mass and power consumption required for small satellites. At the same time, it is being produced for low cost, making it affordable despite its advanced technology.

The preparation tasks for the IOD activities can be grouped as follows: 1. Procurement of a set of standard cubesat-grade HW board hosting Myriad-2 accelerator chips (building up on test breadboard developed in GSTP de-risk activity). Boards will be equipped with a rad-tolerant voltage regulator, with a latching current limiter for restartable latch up protection, and with ethernet interface.A mass production (several 10s of boards) can be initiated, to support also destructive reliability/robustness test activities. 2.

For imaging in the thermal infrared spectrum, microbolometer detectors offer an opportunity for cheaper space missions, because of their low size and power consumption and because they don’t require special cooling. They offer the possibility of a constellation of cubesats, for earth observation. The major conclusion of the project is that the microbolometer technology can be suitable for space flight. Based on tests performed in other projects, no show stoppers were identified. A breadboard was built to test and quantify performance.

The use of analytics functions with EO and non-EO data will bring the following benefits:

• Capacity to characterize the vulnerability of assets/population using selected available models (TBD: GEM-like)
• Capacity to produce risk maps using multi hazard (floods and landslides), exposure and vulnerability information
• Capacity to generate loss mapping (e.g. estimation of monetary losses from potential affected building in an area) integrating selected available financial risk model

Background and justification:

The performed de-risk study revealed that space players are aware of the D4D constraints that one day may be standard rules for Space Agencies. The need to acquire in-flight data is considered of primary importance. However, costs and benefits of in-flight experiments shall be compared. From the analysis conducted by VKI it emerged that recurrent low-cost experiments could be a winning strategy considering i) the intrinsic stochastic nature of the space-debris phenomenon; ii) the reduced measurement capabilities compared to ground experiments; iii) the high risk of a big single experiment.
