A GSTP De-Risk Framework with RUAG Space Germany designed and demonstrated a novel, compact and robust sensor head for angular sensors for space mechanisms, using modern and advanced materials and manufacturing methods.

The final performance tests provided evidence in terms of high precision manufacturability of ceramic packages.

The robust design was found to be suitable for the harsh space environment

The technical work will be organised in 2 phases. In Phase 1 a new model for hot plume with particles will be developed to include the necessary physics such that the combustion process can be computed, the evolution of the alumina can be calculated in the engine and the subsequent impact of the alumina in terms of heat radiation to the upper stages can be quantified. Finally, in Phase 2 the new model will be used in combination with any CFD code provided by the bidder and validated with experimental data provided by ESA.

In contrast to that, the FAST approach already automates building of the test environment and the stimulation of the software, complemented by recording of input-output vectors, observed properties, anomalies and evaluation by metrics and filtering algorithms.

The test of electronic components under radiation is becoming increasingly difficult because of denser and more complex packaging of the state-of-art components, such as microprocessors, memories, FPGAs, packaged in plastic, ceramic or Flip- chip configurations.This implies a larger beam range of the irradiation beam combinations, in order to reach the active and radiation-sensitive semi-conductor die of the component. The larger beam range is obtained with a high energy beam combination.

The increasing need for higher resolution of space optical imaging has prompted the study of novel technologies that can improve the imaging performance beyond what is currently achievable by classical optical systems. Active/adaptive optics is a very promising example of such technologies, allowing to correct for in-flight effects (such as thermo-elastic deformations, radiation effects on optical materials, gravity release, microvibrations, etc.) which impact the optical quality of space instruments.

ESA’s Technical Dossier on Data Systems and On-board Computers roadmap identifies trend going towards increasing the modularity level implemented at the individual equipment supplier. Modularity on suppliers’ RTU product portfolio is something that we often already see these days. Main issue with this approach is that each manufacturer wants to bound usage of its RTUs equipment by incorporating it into avionics stack, like OBC/CMDU, TM/TC, etc.

Within the Space Safety programme (S2P), under preparation for the Council at Ministerial Level (Space19+), Hera is the cornerstone mission of the planetary defence and it builds on extensive work done by the Agency and European industry between 2011 and 2019. In particular, the Hera mission in currently in Phase B1 which will be concluded by a System Requirements Review in Summer 2019 after which a prompt start of Phase B2 is planned to reach PDR by end of 2020.
