ESA has long experience with LEO entry missions like Hermes, ARD, MSRO, and more recently EXPERT and IXV among others. Based on an experience of more than 4 decades of aerodynamic assessment, which have supported most of European space related projects, it is the opportunity to extend the prediction capability to the upper range of the hypersonic, the hypervelocity, to adapt the European Industry to the need of future missions and events.

The Max Planck Institute for Solar System Research (MPS) has developed and operated the imagining systems used for navigation and science in the Rosetta and Dawn missions. The objective of this project was to use recent lessons learned and competences acquired from these missions to develop a queue server and external commanding capability for future onboard image acquisition and image processing systems supporting advanced onboard autonomous navigation.

Digital Test Facility for Spacecraft is a novel approach for its complexity that can be a game-changer for the industry and the space community in general, revolutionising the current practice in terms of tests performed and pre-/post-test activities.
Multiple approaches have been identified and traded-off. One, so-called “Hybrid Approach with Multiple Models”, was selected as most promising. The assessment was overall positive, and the existing SW technology could be used to implement such an approach.

The facilities shall be modular, supporting fast and flexible scenario configuration and shall be movable and relocatable.

Laser-focused resolution and the ability to work without background illumination favour the use of Light Detection and Ranging (LiDAR) in a vast range of space applications. However, LiDAR technology is not without shortcomings, such as its significant Mass, Volume and Power (MVP) budgets, as well as development time. Modern mission parameters are pushing the Space market towards more compact, less costly solutions. LiDAR as it exists today does not meet these requirements, in large part due to the presence of mechanically-driven laser beam-steering components.
