The Myoton experiment has the main objective of understanding the fundamental adaptation mechanisms related to the structure-function-biomechanics interrelations of the human resting myofascial (muscular) system when exposed to long term continuous microgravity. This experiment has been selected for flight on the ISS within the ILSRA (International Life Science Research Announcement) 2014 exercise, and it is planned that ESA astronaut A. Gerst (flying in May 2018) will be the first subject. The device needs to be ready for the third quarter of 2017.

The musculo-skelettal system is victim of the deleterious effects on the human body caused by a prolonged exposure to a weightless environment.
 
The proposed activity is a follow-up of an ESA activity aiming at providing new complementary knowledge about the efficiency of countermeasure exercise programmes in preventing muscle atrophy, with potential use for design (andmonitoring) of training programmes to stimulate specific muscle groups and for rehabilitation.

The development of radioisotope heater units (RHUs) is critically important as a key enabling technology for future planetary and deep space missions. These devices reduce the need to use electrical power to keep systems within nominal temperature ranges, save on using electrical power in power-constrained missions and reduce electromagnetic interference generated by electrical heating systems.
 
In particular, the following tasks will be done in the frame of this activity:

The current Loop Heat Pipe (LHP) module is increasingly needed to support thermal control design and modelling activities for various missions such as Aeolus, MTG and ExoMars. It is fully operational but only for a limited number of LHP architectures and analytical scenarios and they do not cover current needs. The proposed activity aims to further develop and extend this module the following ways:
  • Tuning of the module to improve performance and steady state convergence.

    Having a generic antenna structure suitable to generate different patterns with single linear or single/dual circular polarisation is of major interest. The idea is to use a same basic design or a small range of designs with different aperture diameters which radiation characteristics are adapted to specific missions need by exploiting the conjugate-matched meta-surface concept which has been successfully demonstrated in the recent past under TRP (e.g. T107-060EE: Innovative planar highly directive antenna based on artificial surfaces).
