Radiation shielding mainly depends on particles species and energies: a multi- layered shielding approach could therefore be seen as the most effective shielding at the lowest mass. In previous studies, it was observed that a potential gain of 40% to 50% in shielding effectiveness with respect to Aluminum shielding (at equivalent mass) could be achieved with materials like Tantalum, Polyethylene- Tantalum, Polyethylene-Tungsten and Kapton-Tungsten.

    A number of studies have demonstrated the many advantages of miniature battery- powered timing sources: integrated in a portable user terminal, such sources allow for ultra-fast acquisition (e.g. for secured telecom with long spreading codes) and long coherent integration (e.g. for GNSS operation in interference or indoor environment). Similarly, it has been shown that such sources would significantly improve the sensitivity of some on-board EO instruments (e.g. radiometers, radio- occultation).

    Global quantum key distribution for ultimate data security is realistically only possible if low Earth orbiting (LEO) satellites are utilised. For the reception of the quantum keys telescopes are required that can track LEO satellites, however the high LEO tracking speeds involved often cause unacceptably large tracking errors and the data does not reliably reach the receiver.
