Diffraction gratings, which are key components of most spectral analysis optical instruments, contribute a particularly high amount of scattered stray light due to manufacturing imperfections. Diffraction gratings often represent the strongest contributor of scatter in a modern high performance instrument.

Previous studies have shown the trapped proton models to be grossly underestimating the high energy fluxes in the environment; and the trapped electron models may be overstating the fluxes of energetic electrons within the region.
