In the previous de-risk activity, the feasibility of developing a fuel cell system based on spin-in from terrestrial solutions for different space applications was confirmed. Regenerative fuel cell systems can outperform classic Li-Ion batteries in terms of specific energy (Wh/kg) especially for large systems, e.g. for lunar stations, landers or rovers. The identification of suitable components and suppliers was done along with a preliminary design of the breadboard in the previous activity.

The majority of large engine activity in Europe is hydrogen based and requires more costly pump technology, with deep cryogenic temperatures and complex sealing requirements. This activity was to demonstrate a low-cost LOX pump design, manufacture and test capability with view to enabling a LOX Kerosene 60kN engine program. These engines are more appropriate for the small launcher market than LOX/LH2.

Environment prediction models (like MASTER) are by no means static and require continuous improvements to keep the pace with an ever-changing highly dynamic space debris environment. New types of measurements (as, e.g., from potential in-situ sensors), newly discovered debris sources (as the release of MLI foils), and additional severe debris generating events (like the Chinese ASAT test of January 2007 and the Iridium-33/Cosmos-2251 collision in 2009) need to be reflected.

In recent years, CubeSats have been gaining considerable popularity. Initially, work on CubeSats were mostly conducted by universities, but now other sectors, e.g., commercial business, government agencies, and military, are also interested in CubeSats. Recently, cubesats are being considered for operation beyond LEO, e.g., in deep-space (DS) missions. For such missions, high-gain antennas on-board the CubeSats are needed to ensure communications with Earth.

Achievements:

• Successful plasma ignition was demonstrated with SSI-developed subsystems and the IRS IPT lab model. The ignition test campaign was conducted from 11th -14th April 2023 at IRS, Stuttgart.

• Two PPU amplifiers were designed, simulated, built, and tested; the Class E amplifier successfully ignited the thruster.
