Multiple narrow bandwidth lasers are required for quantum sensor systems. These systems rely on specific coherent sources for laser cooling and trapping, atomic state preparation and interrogation of the cold atomic samples. There is also a parallel requirement to deliver these specific lasers (at the experiment) for predefined periods. Wavelength knowledge to a high accuracy and precision, control and/or removal of the laser frequency drift are key additional attributes of the desired system. This system is known as the Clock Control Unit (CCU).

The antenna, whose property transfer is governed by a transfer of ownership agreement signed between ESA and Portugal, will be re-erected on or next to the existing Santa Maria site. It will be used to serve a range of customers including ESA. Services that will be available to the Agency from that newly erected antenna comprise TTC tracking for science and Earth observation missions, download of Earth observation payload data and launcher tracking. Similar services will be offered to non-ESA customers.

Today, spacecraft FDIR (Fault Detection, Isolation and Recovery) design is a time-consuming and error prone paper-based workflow, which does not help mastering the growing complexity of the space systems, and which mostly prevents early validation and verification of the design. Adequacy of the FDIR design is often assessed very late in the process (integration and test phase), sometimes even after the launch of the spacecraft (FDIR parameter tuning).

Modern space satellites show an increased density of instruments and equipment with a variety of different materials and hence various electromagnetic properties. Whereas the single instruments can usually be well-characterized in the design phase, the complex electromagnetic environment on platform level can usually not be entirely characterized. The trend towards increased frequency sub-millimeter wave instruments further complicates the accurate modelling of the antenna platform.

A number of companies and institutes have been developing carbon fibre composite thin ply technologies primarily for use in the high end composite market associated with certain marine and automotive sporting activities (formula one, Americas cup rigid sails etc.). Thin ply technologies utilise a process to spread tows of fibres to make ultra thin unidirectrional prepreg tapes that allow a reduction in the fibre weight from typically 120-150gsm (grammes per square metre) to around 30gsm using the M55J 6k fibres.

Grid stiffened structures are a type of CFRP structure that is created by arranging multiple ribs in a type of lattice network. Each rib is created from unidirectional pre-preg plies and is joined together in nodes. For this particular application/technology also a skin is foreseen to close the gaps left in the grid structure. This type of configuration allows for structures with a very high specific strength and specific stiffness. The activity seeks to further develop the technology for use in a launcher inter-stage application.

The industries have implemented innovative methods such as importance sampling for improving straylight analysis and coherent beam propagation for modelling beam diffraction effects. Also the optical ray tracers have implemented file interchanges between optical CAD and mechanical CAD platforms.
