Marine litter causes enormous damage to ecosystems and has become a concern for human health, since plastic has been found entering the food chain. 

To try to solve this, research and industrial communities are now working on systems for detecting and/or capturing marine litter debris. Satellite-based detection approaches, in particular, are still in the early stage of their development and need to be validated with ground truth data and observations.

For better use of cryogenic coolers, performance needs to be improved and size needs to be reduced. Miniaturization is usually achieved by increasing the drive frequency of the cooler. The miniaturization is the result of the subsequent smaller displacements in the system. However, miniaturization and higher efficiency requires optimization of efficiency. Technical and performance requirements are setup to match market needs for both COTS+ space applications and high end tactical applications.

Compliant mechanisms (e.g. flexural joints) are applied where the relative motion of parts can be accomplished without using traditional bearings. Slender structures can be properly arranged to provide functions like accurate guiding, speed reduction, or change of motion direction. Compared to traditional mechanisms using bearings, significant improvements are expected. These include a decrease of part count number, frictionless motion transmission, which decreases losses, higher motion ranges, enhanced stiffness, and improved accuracy due to the avoidance of backlash.

Over the past decade, a new and innovative European radioisotope power technology based on americium-241 has been successfully developed. Radioisotope heater units and generators rely on the provision of americium-241 radioisotope material to provide energy. A GSTP Element 1 activity with the UK has advanced the manufacturing capability of 241AM radioisotopes. This sets up an independent European capability in radioisotope power sources that will enable a range of deep space and planetary/lunar missions that are currently impossible without outside nuclear technologies.

The Next Generation Microprocessor and associated SW infrastructure has been developed under various TRP activities starting in 2006. Prototypes in ST Microelectronics C65SPACE 65 nm technology have been manufactured in 2015 under the product code GR740. Prototypes and evaluation boards have been made available to end users as of Q2/2016. The GR740 has been extensively validated with functional, electrical and radiation testing throughout 2016, several anomalies have been found in the design and in the technology library.

In-cloud image processing used for civil protection and employed by World Bank.

An in-cloud image processing software built by a GSTP Element 1 activity with Italy has already been employed by the World Bank. Currently, the tools available on the market to view, edit and process Earth Observation images are mostly desktop-based. But, as high performance computing progresses, there is more and more need for Earth Observation image processing to be moved onto the cloud, to minimise data transfer.

There is a specific requirement on the new land services focusing on continuous change monitoring. The current operational methods of land cover change detection are based on bi-temporal analysis for two points in time. These approaches are applied to 3 to 6 years mapping campaigns, while land cover changes occur continually. ;With this 3 to 6 year gap between inventories, all land change processes occurring in between are not captured. Full-fledged Land Cover Continuous Monitoring system of the land evolution is provided for EEA.

Imaging, Radar and LiDAR system technologies are required to enable the realisation of fully self-driving (autonomous) cars, known as Level 5 Advanced Driver Assistance Systems (ADAS). Of these sensor types, commercial LiDAR is far behind the other options in terms of endurance, reliability and cost. These concerns are primarily due to the current LiDAR systems use of scanning technology that relies on many moving parts.
