Microbial contamination is a generic risk concerning flight hardware degradation, Planetary Protection and potentially crew health. Material surface requires a proper control and monitoring of the microbial cleanliness level. Today, contact plates, swabs and wipes are used for surface sampling. Current launcher RCS thrusters operate with storable, hypergolic propellants. They do not need an ignition system, but these propellants have a negative environmental impact and, due to the high and therefore expensive effort for safe handling and fuelling of the tanks, alternatives have to be found to replace them. One alternative is the use of cryogenic propellants available in the launcher for the RCS thrusters, or storable green propellants for thrusters on long-duration missions, combined with a laser ignition system.

Deployable and inflatable heatshield concepts have a very high potential to extend European capabilities for future Martian lander missions. Such concepts would allow to approach landing zones in the Martian highlands which cannot be reached with current state-of-the-art entry, descent and landing (EDL) technology, mainly due to the very low density of the Martian atmosphere. Alternatively, a deployable or inflatable heatshield concept could allow for an increased landed mass in the Martian lowlands. ;
