The concluded TRP Advanced large FOV UV/VIS/NIR/SWIR spectrometers has identified high efficiency reflective concave gratings working over a large band as a key technology to enable the manufacturing of instruments that encompass the performances of OLCI in terms of optical quality, spatial resolution and compactness. The current activity aims at the design, manufacturing and testing of a reflective grating for a compact imaging spectrometer with very large FOV and working from the UV to the NIR spectrum .

CMOS image sensors offer new possibilities for imaging and spectral applications with fast, flexible readout. They are typically available in two formats - monolithic and hybrid. While monolithic is more common and easier to fabricate, the performance is to some extent dictated by the available manufacturing process. Hybrid image sensor technology, however, offers the ability to independently customise the performance of both the readout circuit (ROIC) and the detection layer from UV to NIR.

Diffraction gratings, which are key components of most spectral analysis optical instruments, contribute a particularly high amount of scattered stray light due to manufacturing imperfections. Diffraction gratings often represent the strongest contributor of scatter in a modern high performance instrument.
