    Advancements in semiconductor technologies like INP and MHEMT have made low-noise amplifiers (LNA) possible for increasingly higher frequencies. Currently efforts are taken to reach frequencies close to 1 THz. Aggressive reduction of the gate length has been essential in this progress, but is becoming less effective with gate lengths approaching 30 nm scale. New technological approaches are needed to reach thz frequencies. New material systems are being investigated, especially those based on antimonides.

    The concluded TRP Advanced large FOV UV/VIS/NIR/SWIR spectrometers has identified high efficiency reflective concave gratings working over a large band as a key technology to enable the manufacturing of instruments that encompass the performances of OLCI in terms of optical quality, spatial resolution and compactness. The current activity aims at the design, manufacturing and testing of a reflective grating for a compact imaging spectrometer with very large FOV and working from the UV to the NIR spectrum .

Furthermore, the materials used in the UV or infrared wavelength spectrum have poor mechanical properties, and are susceptible to plastic deformation.
