With the ever-growing processing capabilities of modern GPPs (e.g. Intel i7 type CPUs), it is possible to run the various signal processing modules of a TTC modem on a standard commercial-off-the-shelf (COTS) commodity computer, and to do this in realtime. Said processing modules are defined by standardization bodies, such as CCSDS and ECSS. The RF-frontend may transfer the digitized RF signals from/to the ADC/DAC through standard interfaces like Ethernet or USB to/from the PC platform.

Additive manufacturing technologies are emerging as a process to machining for small series, complex and costly parts allowing reduction in cost and time. The combination of issues (fabrication of unique products, short series, need for weight reduction through topology optimization) makes AM processes attractive for developing a large family of metallic parts for launcher and satellite applications. Propulsion systems, when used, are usually Pulsed Plasma Thrusters (PPT) that are characterized by low efficiency and low specific impulse. In this activity, a hybrid design of a PPT and a Dense Plasma Focus (DPF) device was de-risked to ensure that higher specific impulses were reachable through the occurrence of the so called ‘magnetic pinch effect’.

The activity aims to undertake a dedicated program of work to optimise the epitaxy, perform material characterisation, device processing trials, thermal modelling and prove the space suitability of the foundry process for manufacture of general purpose GaN based MMICs (e.g. HPAs, LNAs, switches) by extensive test and validation. The foundry supplier shall implement corrective process improvements, when/if required, to ensure compatibility with space operating requirements.
