RACE is a GSTP Element 3 funded, in-orbit demonstration mission (IOD). The satellite will fly in low Earth orbit to demonstrate, for the first time, the capability of nano-satellite systems to perform close proximity operations (rendezvous, docking or close fly around) with different targets, using critical miniaturised technologies. These technologies are currently under development in Europe such as relative navigation sensors, control actuators, and docking mechanisms.

The majority of large engine activity in Europe is hydrogen based and requires more costly pump technology, with deep cryogenic temperatures and complex sealing requirements. This activity was to demonstrate a low-cost LOX pump design, manufacture and test capability with view to enabling a LOX Kerosene 60kN engine program. These engines are more appropriate for the small launcher market than LOX/LH2.

The core of the activity is the development and demonstration of technologies to homogenize the data for joint use: this is highly relevant for Atmospheric Sciences data where a large variety of data in terms of sensing time and geometry and dimensionality (1D to 3D) prevent the combined use of various datasets. Nevertheless, the developed methodologies can be applied to other domains, to create meaningful subsets to cope with the growing of the data stream (large amount of EO data coming from different platforms for the same domain).

The activity focuses in particular when considering multiple re-ignition of upperstages. This entails waterhammer effects or pre-combustion phenomena where propellants undergo drastic changes due to sudden exposure to near-vacuum conditions. To allow proper modelling, detailed experiments need to be created for typical multi-phase, multi-component flow.
 
Following activities are foreseen:
 
  • Evaluation of the liquid front behaviour during waterhammer prior, during and after impact for different operational conditions.

Onboard computers (OBCs) are a requirement for every spacecraft, from satellites to rovers. Planetary Transportation Systems (PTS) has taken on the task of developing their own OBC unit in-house, tailored to the company’s needs: the in-house development of CubeSats and cooperative avionics technology, as well as own missions at large scale. The development status was raised to TRL 4 within this de-risking activity. The follow-on developments are planned to reach TRL 6.

LENA space successfully built and demonstrated a 60kN Kerosene pump, developed internal manufacturing capabilities including specialist impeller manufacturing procedures. LENA have designed a technology development roadmap for the pump technology targeting the next critical steps towards flight qualification.

It is proposed to develop and optimize encapsulation technology for the transformation of traditional Through Hole Mount electronic inductive components into Surface Mount Technology. This will involve the development and industrialization of encapsulation process and the development of mechanical elements for the integration of traditionally applied geometries of inductive components. The proposed activity is a continuation from a GSTP 4 activity (G604-11EP Study). The goal of that activity was to assess materials and technologies related to a series of planar inductive components.
