The standard - ODF (onboard data file) Stds - prescribes semantic and format of any all on board crew procedures. The procedure documents are in XML format, with an ISS specific schema used.

Launchers have a large number of pyrotechnic functions that are vital for a range of critical functions from engine ignition, control of the propulsion system, passivation, stage and fairing separation and in the case of emergency launcher destruction. Today European launchers rely on conventional pyrotechnics that are activated by passing an electric current through a bridge wire which results in local heating. Optopyrotechnics is a replacement technology that uses laser pulses to ignite the key pyro functions.

Current technologies for measuring the ion velocity of ion thrusters (and therefore their efficiency) are based on slow measurements that can take up to 8 hours against seconds for new technologies based on fluorescence, optical fibre spectrometry or laser spectroscopy. ORBITA aims to select and enhance one of these technologies to develop a diagnostic device capable of performing real-time measurements of thruster plumes.

    The state-of-the-art in Xenon feeding systems, specifically pressure control devices, which reduce the gas pressure from storage level, usually upwards of 100bar, to the pressures acceptable by the thrusters? XFC (i.e. circa 2 bar) is the Bang-bang pressure regulation unit (BPRU); such an equipment was, as an example, used in the Smart-1 mission. The BPRU allows extra safety, never allowing contact between the high and low pressure stages.

    The precision welding of metallic joints plays an important role in the production of components for space applications. In order to meet the demanding levels required, metallic joints must be produced which have the correct dimensional tolerance, are free from defects and exhibit the correct mechanical and corrosion performance. In particular, in propulsion systems all valves and pipes have welds which must be leak tight and prevent safety hazardous propellants from leaking.
